In recent times, mud-slinging on Tilak, Savarkar, and Ramdas has become proof of one becoming an "intellectual". It is considered a fait-accompli to question Savarkar's mercy petitions, Tilak’s politics of Castes, and whether Ramdas was really a guru of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. या देशातील विविध नागरिकांना विविध प्रकारचे हेतू असतात. सत्तास्पर्धेसाठी महापुरुषांच्या चारित्र्याचे हनन करणे हा उद्योग हा नवीन नाही. विशेषत: कम्युनिस्टांना हा सोडून कोणताच उद्योग करता येत नसल्याने, अथवा समाजात जाऊन उत्तम प्रबोधन करता येत नसल्याने, त्यासाठी वात्सल्यावर आधारलेल्या संघटना उभारता येत नसल्याने, व अखिल भारतीय एकसंध एकच पक्ष अनेक दशके चालवता येत नसल्याने, ते अभ्यास न करणाऱ्यांना बहकवण्यासाठी अधूनमधून इकडेतिकडे डांबरफेक करतात. गेल्या काही काळामध्ये सावरकर, टिळक आणि रामदास अशा तिघांचे चारित्र्यहनन करणे हा तुम्ही "विचारवंत" असल्याचा पुरावा मानला जाऊ लागला. त्यामुळे सावरकरांची माफी, टिळकांचा जातिभेद आणि रामदासांचे गुरू नसणे यावर राळ उडवणे हे भूषण मानले जाऊ लागले. दुसरीकडे या तिघांचे भक्तही तितकेच अविचारी निघू लागले. या तिघांचेही अनन्यसाधारण महत्त्व मोजक्या प्रभावी आणि तेजस्वी शब्दात सांगणे हे अनेक हिंदुत्ववाद्यांना जमत नाही. या तिघांच्याही आयुष्यात अजिबात चुका नाहीत असे नाही. चिकित्सा करूनही एखाद्या माणसाला वंदनीय मानणे, हा जणू आजच्या काळात गुन्हा झाला आहे. सावरकर, टिळक
